One of the first hings you do with a new puppy is get your new puppy potty trained. Thankfully, potty training your puppy doesn't have to be that hard. This article will show you some tips on potty training your puppy.
First, you need to understand that puppies are like babies and they simply make mistakes because they don't know better and can't understand their urges. Your puppy doesn't mean to ruin your good carpet; he simply doesn't know that he has to go potty.
A puppy's ability to feel the urge to go potty develops as they age, much like children. You can help your puppy potty train faster by developing a schedule for your puppy to follow. Take the puppy out to go potty at the same times every day to allow the puppy to become accustomed to a schedule.
Especially if you are not always home during the day, you can expect there to be accidents while you puppy is potty training. You can help minimize the mess by putting down newspapers for the puppy to relieve himself on, but it will take additional training for the puppy to know this is for emergencies. When accidents happen, don't get angry - just clean up and disinfect the area.
You can learn to notice some of the signs that your puppy needs to be taken out for a potty trip. When you see your puppy acting up in a certain way, it may be time to take them out to relieve themselves.
Here are some signs that a puppy needs to go potty:
* Showing Restlessness
* Sniffing at a spot they had previously soiled
* Puppy is Whimpering and wining
* Puppy is distracted from play
As each puppy is different, you will soon learn to recognize the signs in your dog. When your puppy starts to show this potty signal it is time to take them out for a walk and direct them to go in the place you want them to use.
When your puppy does good, remember to praise him. Praise displays to the puppy that they have done the right thing and will make them happy to do it again to seek more praise.
Although potty training your puppy can be dificult, it is just a matter of being consistent and patient with your new puppy long enough for their minds and bladders to mature and train. With patience and time, your puppy will potty train and accidents will be a problem of the past.

Effective Puppy Potty Training
by Steven Smithies
in Family / Pets (submitted 2009-09-30)
Puppy potty training must start out early. When the puppy starts to move around easily, you should start training your pet right away. This will keep cleaning the floor of doggie "dootie" to a minimum, which can become quite a frustrating ordeal for most new puppy owners.
If essential steps are not followed, your puppy potty training can become very lengthy and problematic. On the other hand, if done correctly and regularly, it is quite easy and rather effective.
There are several successful techniques that you can follow when doing puppy potty training for our puppies.
Crate Training - You can use the crate for easier training. If you are unable to closely monitor your pet during most of the training, the use of a crate would be the most practical method of training.
The puppy sees the crate as his den, and dogs have a natural instinct to not soiling the place where they sleep. Whatever method you decide to use, you must be consistent throughout the training. Always use the same command to send your puppy to the crate. To reinforce the good response from your pet don't forget to reward your puppy. Your puppy should also spend a sufficient amount of time outside of the crate to complete the puppy potty training.
Assigned Potty Spot - Again, you must be consistent throughout the training of your puppy. Having an assigned potty spot means that you take your puppy to the same spot each time you take him outside to potty. You should only allow your puppy about 10 minutes before taking him back inside. You should only allow playtime if your puppy went potty. This way your puppy will know that going outside means potty and not play.
Success Deserves Reward - When you are potty training your puppy, you are basically inducing the desired behavior by reinforcement. Whenever you give your puppy a reward for his proper behavior and response, he will start to associate potty training to good things thus reinforcing that proper puppy behavior.
Using a Leash - The leash is essential and a very important tool in your efforts to potty training your puppy. It is important to keep your puppy close while doing the training. Keep a firm grip on the leash so that you have the puppy near you at all times.
Practice Makes Permanent - You may have heard it as "Practice makes perfect", but if you are a realist, you know nothing is perfect. However, the more practice your puppy has with the potty training will make a permanent impression on him. Regular practice should include without fail, taking your puppy outside after eating and as soon as you let him out of his crate. He will soon associate these two events as his time to do what he needs to.
Don't Use a Potty Pad - Resorting to any tactics or techniques inside the house will only reinforce the behavior to your puppy that it is OK to potty inside the house.
Foresee Possible Accidents - Be prepared, accidents are bound to happen while potty training your puppy. Having the necessary items handy when for accidents happen. These items may include paper towels, enzymatic cleaners and odor neutralizers.

Not until he is good at puppy potty training, keep him off restricted areas in your home or keep him away from your furniture. One of the first things that you have to learn is how to recognize when your puppy indicates to go potty. It is not enough to just leave your puppy outside the house and wait until he poops. There are puppies that are already potty trained when you buy them, but somehow this deal will spare you a lot of bonding time with your new puppy. But when the puppy needs to be potty trained, you have to prepare yourself for the task.
You can research on helpful tips on how to conduct puppy potty training according to your dog's breed. Your dogs should not be punished during puppy potty training. Be generous in acknowledging when your dog follows your command in potty training. Puppy potty training should be a pleasant experience for you and your dog. Whenever there are potty accidents, do not blame your dog. With persistence in training, your pet will eventually control his potty. You may use crates during puppy potty training because you will be able to monitor its potty signals especially at night. However, your puppy must also be crate trained if you wish to use a crate for him.
Puppies also have regular potty routine which may vary according to their activities. At the early part of puppy potty training, you may need to deal with his potty routines. Then, you can wait until he develops a control over his potty signals. That is the time you introduce some new routines. You have to be keen at knowing your puppy's potty routine signals so that you can deal with it appropriately. When it comes to feeding, puppies need a lot of water especially when you feed them with dry dog food. During potty training, feed your puppy at least four hours before bedtime and avoid giving him water two hours before his bedtime.
You have to find a spot where you want your dog to use when he needs to go potty. Make sure that you create a certain routine of bringing him to that spot several times in a day. This will impose on him that you want him to use that spot when he needs to go potty. Furthermore, do not play with your puppy while he is doing his business. If he does not go potty within 10 minutes, you may confine him on his crate for another 15 minutes before bringing him back to his potty spot. Reward him every time he succeeds at this task.
Puppy potty training may not be an easy and quick job, but surely a potty trained dog is something you can be proud of.
